Heaphy Track Vehicle Access
West Coast's premium 4WD beach track
The 85-kilometer Heaphy Track opens its gates to 4WD vehicles twice yearly, transforming New Zealand’s most famous walking track into an epic coastal drive. From Collingwood, the track climbs through native beech forest before dropping onto Heaphy Beach — 16 kilometers of hard-packed sand where you’ll share the coastline with fur seals and the occasional stranded tourist. The Heaphy River mouth crossing at low tide marks the technical crux, with soft sand traps waiting for the unprepared.
This is no weekend warrior route. Bookings fill months ahead, and Parks require registered vehicles with recovery gear. Stock 4WD with low-range gearing handles most sections, but beach driving experience is essential — sand conditions change hourly with tides. Vehicle access runs September-October and May only, weather permitting. Carry extra fuel, food for 2-3 days, and camping gear for DOC huts along the route. The payoff is exclusive access to one of New Zealand’s most pristine coastlines, minus the hiking boots.
