Starting from Ölgii, this track follows ancient herding paths through the Altai Mountains to Tavan Bogd National Park, where Mongolia, Russia, China, and Kazakhstan converge. You’ll ford the Khoton River, navigate boulder fields that’ll test your differential, and climb passes where snow lingers year-round despite summer heat in the valleys below.

This is serious remote country requiring a capable 4WD with underbody protection, recovery gear, and navigation skills — GPS is spotty and trails fork without warning. Best tackled July through September when river crossings are manageable, though weather changes fast above treeline. No fuel or supplies exist between Ölgii and Tavan Bogd base camp, a 240-kilometer stretch through absolutely nothing. What you earn is access to pristine alpine lakes, petroglyphs older than recorded history, and hospitality from nomads who still hunt with golden eagles.
