Andamooka Opal Fields Dispersed Camping
Rough bush camping spread across dozens of mining claims and vacant blocks throughout South Australia’s opal capital. Most spots are just pull-offs near diggings, with zero facilities but plenty of elbow room among the mullock heaps and shaft markers. The town’s got a pub, general store, and fuel, but out in the fields it’s you and the occasional miner running a generator until midnight.
Access is via unsealed roads that turn to bulldust in dry conditions and bog in the wet. Some areas restrict camping during active mining operations — respect the claims and ask locals if unsure. Best avoided during school holidays when fossickers flood in.
