Rožanski Kukovi Rock Formations
These towering limestone spires rise from the karst plateau of Northern Velebit, creating a lunar landscape of weathered rock formations and hidden caves. The area offers spectacular views across the Adriatic to distant Italian peaks on clear days. Several rough 4WD tracks access the formations from the coastal highway, winding through dense pine forests before opening onto the stark limestone plateau. The site attracts serious hikers and cavers but sees relatively few overlanders.
Access requires high-clearance 4WD via unmarked forest roads that can be muddy after rain. No facilities whatsoever — bring water and be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather. Best visited May through September when snow clears the higher elevations.
