Via Salaria Apennine Extension

Roman roads through Italy's forgotten mountains

Difficult

The Via Salaria Extension follows the ancient Roman salt route beyond its traditional terminus, climbing into the rugged Apennine Mountains through villages that time forgot. Past the hilltop fortress town of Amatrice, the route fragments into a network of shepherd tracks and medieval mule paths, threading between peaks that rise above 2,000 meters. Stone markers bearing Roman numerals still mark distances along sections where the original paving stones survive, worn smooth by two millennia of pack animals and mountain weather.

Difficult terrain requires experienced drivers and vehicles with low-range 4WD, skid plates, and recovery equipment—loose rock, steep gradients, and seasonal washouts make this a serious mountain challenge. Summer and early fall offer the best conditions, though sudden mountain storms can turn dry creek beds into torrents. No services exist for 80 kilometers between Amatrice and Norcia—carry fuel, water, and emergency supplies. The payoff comes in untouched medieval architecture, sweeping Apennine vistas, and the satisfaction of driving roads that Caesar’s legions once marched.
