Portuguese Serra da Estrela Shepherd’s High Route

Granite giants and ancient shepherd culture

Difficult

The Serra da Estrela shepherd’s route follows centuries-old transhumance paths through Portugal’s highest mountain range, where shepherds still drive flocks between seasonal pastures. This rocky track winds through glacial valleys past abandoned schist villages and traditional shepherd huts called ‘palheiros.’ The route climbs to Torre, mainland Portugal’s highest point at 1,993 meters, where you’ll navigate granite boulder fields and ancient stone walls that mark territorial boundaries older than the nation itself.

Expect difficult technical terrain with loose granite, steep grades, and narrow shelf roads that demand precise wheel placement. Modified 4×4 with underbody protection and aggressive tires recommended—stock vehicles will struggle on the granite slabs. June through September offers the best conditions when high-altitude snow melts clear the passes. No permits needed, but carry extra water and food as services are sparse. Wild camping is tolerated in designated areas. This route offers authentic Portuguese mountain culture and some of the most dramatic granite landscapes in Western Europe.
