Via Salaria Ancient Roman Road – Italy
Caesar's salt road through the Apennines
The Via Salaria’s mountainous sections between Rieti and Ascoli Piceno preserve stretches of original Roman stonework that modern SUVs can still traverse. Built in 6th century BC to transport salt from Adriatic coastal flats to Rome, sections like the Monti della Laga crossing maintain their ancient alignments through steep-walled valleys. The route passes through Accumoli and Amatrice (rebuilt after 2016 earthquakes), with the most challenging technical section climbing from the Tronto River valley to Campo Imperatore at 2,130 meters elevation. Stone bridges from Augustus’s era still span mountain torrents.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for the upper mountain sections, though passenger cars can handle valley portions. October through May offers the clearest weather, avoiding summer tourist traffic on Gran Sasso approaches. No permits needed on public sections, but respect private property markers. Fuel available in valley towns every 50 kilometers. The reward goes beyond technical driving: you’re literally following the same route Roman legions used to conquer the Apennines, with archaeological sites and medieval hill towns that predate most European settlements.
