Trans Euro Trail Western (TET-W) – Portugal Section

Portugal's backbone from border to Atlantic cliffs.

Difficult

The Portuguese leg of the Trans Euro Trail Western Route cuts a 450-kilometer swath from the Spanish frontier near Mourão down to the windswept cliffs of Sagres, threading together Roman mining roads, cork oak forests, and forgotten shepherd tracks. The route drops through the marble quarries of Estremoz, where locals have carved white stone for centuries, then climbs into the Serra de São Mamede before descending through the eucalyptus plantations toward Sines. Key waypoints include the medieval fortress at Marvão, the river crossing at Guadiana, and the technical rocky descent into the fishing village of Zambujeira do Mar.

This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with good ground clearance for the rocky sections and steep marble quarry approaches. Best run April through October when river levels are manageable and summer heat hasn’t turned the Alentejo into an oven. No permits needed, but fuel stops are sparse south of Beja—carry extra jerry cans. Wild camping is generally tolerated away from villages, and you’ll earn coastal sunsets, Roman ruins, and some of the finest off-road riding on the Iberian Peninsula.
