Disko Island Abandoned Qullissat Coal Mine
This abandoned coal mining settlement sits frozen in time on Disko Island’s north shore, with weathered buildings, rusted machinery, and mining infrastructure scattered across the tundra. The site operated from 1924 to 1972, and walking through the ruins feels like stepping into Arctic industrial history. Views across Disko Bay to the mainland glaciers are spectacular.
Accessible by boat from Qeqertarsuaq or helicopter during summer months. No marked trails, but the ruins are extensive and worth several hours of exploration. Weather can change rapidly, and some structures are unstable. The old cemetery and superintendent’s house are particularly well-preserved.
