Kangerlussuaq Inland Ice Edge Research Circuit
Edge of the ice sheet expedition route
This challenging circuit follows rough research access roads from Kangerlussuaq Airport northeast to active glaciological monitoring stations positioned directly on the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The route passes through the DYE-2 radar station ruins before reaching modern automated weather stations and ice core drilling sites. Deep sand sections alternate with rocky moraine fields, and the final approach to the ice margin requires navigating around massive meltwater lakes and unstable glacial debris.
Expert-level difficulty demanding experienced Arctic drivers with winch-equipped vehicles and full expedition gear. Weather changes rapidly near the ice sheet, and GPS becomes unreliable near the magnetic anomalies of the ice margin. Essential to carry emergency shelter, satellite communication, and minimum 5 days food/fuel. June through August only, with research station coordination recommended. The payoff is standing at the edge of the world’s second-largest ice sheet, witnessing climate change in real-time through dramatic glacial retreat.
