Holsteinsborg Ice Cap Perimeter Road
Ice cap circumnavigation with active glacier access
The Holsteinsborg Ice Cap Perimeter Road forms a rugged 140-kilometer loop around one of Greenland’s smaller ice caps near Sisimiut, offering close access to active glaciers and dramatic ice formations. Originally constructed for scientific research and ice monitoring, this route crosses tundra, boulder fields, and seasonal meltwater channels while maintaining views of the ice cap’s outlet glaciers. The road passes the Alangordlia weather station and includes technical sections through the Russell Glacier terminus area where ice movement creates constantly changing terrain.
Difficult trail requiring experienced 4WD drivers and self-recovery equipment for mud, rocks, and potential ice-dam flooding. Arctic camping gear essential as weather changes rapidly, and rescue is days away. Best attempted July-August during peak melt season when most streams are fordable. No permits needed but inform authorities of travel plans. Zero cell coverage throughout. What you gain is rare access to active glacial processes and some of Greenland’s most pristine wilderness camping beneath the midnight sun, plus the satisfaction of completing one of the Arctic’s most challenging civilian routes.
