South Greenland Sheep Farm Circuit

Norse ruins and sheep farms in Greenland's green belt

Moderate

The South Greenland Sheep Farm Circuit winds 85 kilometers through the Narsarsuaq and Qassiarsuk valleys, connecting Erik the Red’s Brattahlid settlement ruins with active sheep farms in Greenland’s most temperate region. This gravel road network follows fjord edges and crosses multiple streams, passing through areas where Norse settlers established farms over 1,000 years ago. The route includes stops at Igaliku’s reconstructed cathedral ruins and the operational sheep farms near Upernaviarsuk, where Greenlandic farmers still graze livestock in sub-Arctic conditions.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for stream crossings and loose gravel sections, particularly around Tasersuaq Lake. Best driven June through September when streams are manageable and weather is most stable. No permits required, but respect private farm boundaries and archaeological sites. Limited cell service in valleys, decent near settlements. The reward is experiencing Greenland’s agricultural heritage and some of the most accessible Norse archaeology in North America, plus stunning views of Tunulliarfik Fjord’s icebergs.
