Monte Albán Archaeological Site
Monte Albán sits on an artificially flattened mountain plateau 400 meters above Oaxaca Valley, commanding panoramic views across the entire region. This ancient Zapotec capital spans over 2,000 years of continuous occupation, with pyramids, ball courts, and intricate stone carvings scattered across the main plaza. The site opens at 8 AM and closes at 5 PM, with entrance fees around 80 pesos. Parking is available at the visitor center, though the final kilometer requires walking uphill.
Access is via a well-marked paved road that winds up the mountain from Oaxaca city, about 10 kilometers southwest. The road can get busy with tour buses mid-morning, so early arrival is recommended. Bring water and sun protection — there’s limited shade on the exposed plateau. The altitude and open terrain can be intense during midday heat.
