El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve Campamento Rústico
Perched at 1,800 meters in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas cloud forest, this basic campground sits within one of Mexico’s most important biosphere reserves. The site offers simple facilities with pit toilets and potable water, surrounded by ancient oak and pine forests draped in bromeliad-laden mist. Early mornings bring the best chances to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal, along with howler monkeys and over 300 bird species.
Access requires 45 minutes of steep, winding mountain road from Angel Albino Corzo. The final 8 kilometers are rough dirt with several stream crossings — high-clearance recommended during rainy season (June-October). Nights drop to near freezing even in summer, so pack warm gear. Reserve rangers occasionally patrol and can provide trail maps for the extensive hiking network.
