Playa Zipolite Beach Camping
This kilometer-long stretch of golden sand has been drawing overlanders and backpackers for decades, with informal camping allowed directly on the beach for a small fee (usually 50-100 pesos) paid to local families who ‘manage’ sections of sand. Basic palapa restaurants provide meals and cold beer, while simple shower and toilet facilities exist behind the main strip. The beach has strong currents and is not ideal for swimming, but the sunset views are spectacular.
Access is via a paved road that drops down from Highway 200, suitable for any vehicle though parking can be tight during peak season. The vibe is laid-back hippie meets Mexican fishing village. Nights can be breezy and sandy, so secure your gear well. No formal reservations – just show up and find a spot.
