Ruta de los Conventos Oaxaca

Dominican monasteries in the Sierra Norte

Difficult

The Ruta de los Conventos threads through Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte, connecting five massive Dominican monasteries built in the 1500s using forced indigenous labor and local volcanic stone. The route starts in Tlacochahuaya and winds through Yagul, Mitla, Hierve el Agua, and up to the cloud forests around Ixtlán de Juárez. Stone bridges span deep barrancas carved by centuries of seasonal flooding, and the narrow mountain roads cling to precipitous ridgelines where ancient Zapotec ruins emerge from the jungle canopy.

This is technical terrain requiring experienced drivers and high-clearance 4WD with low-range gearing. Rocky switchbacks, steep grades up to 18%, and seasonal washouts make this expert-level difficulty. Carry recovery gear, spare tires, and mechanical tools. Rainy season (June-September) makes many sections impassable. The payoff includes some of Mexico’s most spectacular colonial architecture, world-class mezcal tastings, and overnight stays in indigenous communities practicing traditional weaving and cooking techniques passed down for generations.
