Sierra de San Pedro Mártir Ridge Route
Mexico's alpine secret hiding above the desert
The Sierra de San Pedro Mártir Ridge Route cuts through Mexico’s most unexpected landscape — a 10,000-foot alpine wilderness floating above Baja’s desert floor. This remote traverse follows logging roads and game trails through stands of Jeffrey pine and white fir, past Picacho del Diablo, Mexico’s highest peak, where snow caps linger into June. The route demands navigation skills as GPS signals fade in the granite canyons, and several technical rock ledges require precise wheel placement and spotters.
Rated Expert due to elevation, remoteness, and technical rock work that’ll test even seasoned drivers. You’ll need a well-built 4WD with skid plates, recovery gear, and cold-weather camping kit — temperatures drop below freezing year-round at elevation. Best tackled April through October when snow doesn’t block the high passes. No permits required, but fuel up in Ensenada and pack water for three days minimum. The payoff is Mexico’s most unique overlanding — pine-scented air, snow-touched peaks, and the kind of solitude you thought didn’t exist in North America anymore.
