Karakoram Highway Khunjerab Pass
Khunjerab Pass marks the dramatic high-altitude border between Pakistan and China on the legendary Karakoram Highway. At over 15,000 feet, this is the world’s highest paved border crossing, where overlanders must navigate Pakistani exit procedures, a no-man’s land, and Chinese entry protocols. The pass itself offers otherworldly views of glaciated peaks and barren high-altitude desert, but weather can change rapidly with snow possible even in summer.
Open seasonally from May 1st to November 30th, weather permitting. Border hours are typically 10 AM to 6 PM Pakistan time. Carry extra fuel, water, and warm clothing — altitude sickness is common. The nearest fuel is hours away in either direction. Pakistani and Chinese visas must be arranged in advance.
