Escalante Petrified Forest State Park
Twenty-two sites spread across red sandstone benches overlooking Wide Hollow Reservoir, with scattered chunks of petrified wood dotting the landscape. The campground sits at 5,400 feet with decent spacing between sites, flush toilets, and showers that work most of the time. Sites fill up March through October, especially weekends when Burr Trail traffic peaks.
The reservoir provides decent fishing and a place to rinse dust off after running the nearby slot canyons. Petrified Forest Trail is worth the hour walk if you need to stretch legs between trail runs. Wind can howl through here — stake everything down.
