Hole-in-the-Rock Road

Trailhead

This legendary dirt road follows the route of Mormon pioneers who blasted their way through solid rock to reach the Colorado River in 1879-80. The graded dirt road runs 62 miles from Highway 12 near Escalante southeast to Lake Powell, passing Spooky Gulch, Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon, and Dance Hall Rock. Road surface is generally good for passenger cars in dry conditions, but becomes impassable when wet — the bentonite clay turns to slick gumbo.

Multiple dispersed camping opportunities along the route, particularly around Dance Hall Rock at mile 36. No services once you leave pavement. Carry extra water, food, and fuel. Check weather before committing — summer thunderstorms can strand you for days. Winter access depends on snow conditions in the high country.
