Keokuk County Coal Creek Historic Mining Circuit
Strip mine ruins and reclaimed prairie landscape.
Coal Creek winds through what was once Iowa’s most productive strip mining region, where draglines the size of buildings carved terraces into the prairie from the 1920s through 1980s. The circuit follows old coal haul roads between Webster and Keota, passing through the massive Peabody mine complex where highwalls still tower 60 feet above reclaimed grasslands. Rusted cable reels, abandoned conveyor foundations, and flooded strip pits mark the landscape like industrial archaeology.
This is easy terrain for any vehicle with decent ground clearance, though spring rains can make the clay-based mining roads slippery as hell. The county has done minimal maintenance since mining ceased, creating some interesting washouts and erosion channels. Best visited in late summer when the reclaimed prairie grasses are golden and the strip pit lakes are at their clearest. Bring a camera for the industrial ruins and expect to see plenty of waterfowl in the flooded pits.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive this trail in a regular SUV or do I need 4WD?
Any stock SUV can handle this trail easily. It's maintained gravel roads with minimal elevation change, so even a Honda CR-V would be fine.
Is the Coal Creek circuit accessible in winter?
Winter access depends on snow conditions since Keokuk County doesn't plow these gravel roads. May through October offers the most reliable access and best prairie viewing.
Do I need permits or pay fees to drive this mining circuit?
No permits or fees required. These are public county roads managed by Keokuk County.
What's the most challenging part of this trail?
There really isn't one - this is an easy scenic drive with only 240 feet of elevation gain over 16 miles. The gravel can get washboarded after heavy rains.
Are there any mining ruins or equipment still visible along the route?
Yes, you'll see scattered pieces of century-old coal mining equipment rusting in the reclaimed prairie areas. The strip mine topography is still clearly visible despite decades of natural restoration.
