Black River State Forest Castle Mound Campground
Castle Mound sits in a quiet pocket of Black River State Forest, offering 15 primitive sites scattered through mixed pine and oak. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table, with vault toilets and a hand pump well serving the campground. The sites are well-spaced with decent privacy, and the sandy soil drains well after rain. Most sites can handle larger rigs, though a few are better suited for smaller setups.
Access is via paved Castle Mound Road off Highway 54, then a short gravel spur into the campground. The area sees steady use during hunting season but stays pretty quiet the rest of the year. No reservations — it’s first-come, first-served.
