Northern Highland American Legion State Forest Razorback Ridge Trail

Granite backbone of Wisconsin's northwoods.

Difficult

The Razorback Ridge Trail follows an ancient glacial esker through the heart of Wisconsin’s largest state forest, where granite boulders the size of pickup trucks still mark where the ice sheets finally surrendered. This abandoned fire road climbs steadily through towering white pines to the old Squirrel Lake Fire Tower, then drops into a chain of hidden kettle lakes where brook trout still rise to dry flies and timber wolves leave tracks in the sand.

Difficult rating comes from loose granite slabs and off-camber rock gardens that’ll test your spotter’s patience and your differential’s strength. Modified 4WD recommended with aggressive tread, skid plates, and lockers helpful on the steeper pitches. June through September offers the best conditions, though fall colors justify the risk of early snow. No permits needed but respect dispersed camping limits — this country remembers when it was truly wild.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle Razorback Ridge Trail?

No, you need a modified 4WD with skid plates minimum. The granite slabs and rocky ledges will tear up stock undercarriage protection.

Is Razorback Ridge Trail open in winter?

No, best season is June through September. Snow and ice make the rocky sections extremely dangerous and most access roads are closed.

Do I need permits to run Razorback Ridge Trail?

No permits required for the trail itself, but you'll need a Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker. Camping may require reservations at designated sites.

What's the hardest section of Razorback Ridge Trail?

The granite spine sections around mile 12-15 have the steepest rock faces and tightest lines. Expect body damage if you're not careful with your approach angles.

How far can I get without cell service on this trail?

Zero cell service for the entire 24-mile route. Download offline maps and tell someone your exact itinerary before heading out.
