Soudan Underground Mine State Park
This historic iron mine offers the only underground mine tour in Minnesota, dropping visitors nearly half a mile down into the earth via a rickety 1920s cage elevator. The hour-long tour explores the 27th level of the mine, where temperatures stay a constant 50°F year-round. Above ground, the park has interpretive trails through the headframe complex and mining equipment displays.
The mine tours run Memorial Day through Labor Day, with limited fall weekend tours. Tours fill up fast on summer weekends, so reserve ahead. The park sits on the edge of the Superior National Forest, making it a solid stop when running trails in the Ely area.
