Sanetti Plateau — Tulu Dimtu Afro-Alpine Wild Camping
The Sanetti Plateau is the high roof of Bale Mountains National Park. It’s a treeless sweep of giant lobelia, heather, and frost-shattered rock with tarns scattered across it, and Tulu Dimtu (about 4,377 m) is the high point you drive past. Camping here means pitching in the open on the moorland near the road, and you’ll want to stick to spots the park scouts point you to. No trees, no shelter, and no services. Nights drop below freezing year-round, and wind rips across the flats. Ethiopian wolves, the rarest canid on earth, hunt giant mole rats in daylight right off the road shoulder, so keep your distance and keep dogs out of it entirely.
At this elevation, altitude sickness is the real risk. Come up from Goba, spend a night or two lower first, and don’t go straight to sleeping at 4,000+ m. Park entry fees, vehicle fees, and camping rules apply, and a scout or guide may be required. Confirm all of that at the Bale Mountains National Park office in Goba or Dinsho before heading up. Road condition has been changing as sections get upgraded, so verify current surface and weather ahead. Bring all water, fuel, and cold-weather bedding. The dry season, roughly November through March, is your window; the rains turn the plateau to bog.
Wolves, lobelia, and frost at 4,000 metres.
