Wolfe Creek Crater (Kandimalal) — Basic Bush Camp on the Tanami Road Spur
Wolfe Creek Crater, or Kandimalal to the Jaru people, is a rust-red ring about 880 metres across, punched into the Great Sandy Desert fringe. It’s a basic, unfenced, low-key camping area in Kandimalal National Park. Expect a pit toilet, a rough parking and camp area, and not much else. There’s no potable water, no shop and no power, so bring everything. Sunsets on the rim are the reason you’re here, and the night sky is huge. Dry-season weekends can see a handful of rigs. Weekdays, you may be on your own with the dingoes.
You reach it by turning off the Tanami Road onto the Wolfe Creek Crater Road, which is long, graded gravel and washboard. Plenty of people do it in a high-clearance 2WD, but carry two spares, extra water and fuel. Don’t trust it after rain, as the red clay turns to grease and the road can close. Summer heat is brutal, so aim for the cooler dry months. Check Halls Creek visitor info or Main Roads WA road reports for conditions and any camping rules before you go. Take your rubbish with you.
Have a dirty day.
