Bungle Bungle Beehive Formations
The Bungle Bungle Range’s 2000 beehive domes create a landscape unlike anywhere else on earth — striped orange sandstone towers rising 200 meters from narrow gorges. The formations remained unknown to mainstream Australia until aerial surveys in the 1980s. Two main areas offer different experiences: Piccaninny Creek for the classic beehive views, Cathedral Gorge for an acoustically perfect natural amphitheater.
The 53km access track from the Great Northern Highway is rough 4WD only — rocky, corrugated, and punishing on vehicles. Park opens April through December; wet season flooding makes access impossible. No fuel, water, or supplies inside the park. Spring Creek track junction marks the final 2km push to the main camping area. Book well ahead — this is bucket-list territory.
