Lakina River Bridge — McCarthy Road Gravel Bar and Pullout Camping
The Lakina River crosses the McCarthy Road on a one-lane bridge in the back half of the run, well past the Kuskulana and Strelna crossings. Pullouts and gravel flats near the bridge are the kind of spot people use for a roadside camp. Expect river noise, spruce and cottonwood, and big views toward the Wrangells on a clear evening. No developed facilities. Plan on packing in water, treating anything you pull from the river, and packing out all your trash. This is bear country, so cook and store food accordingly.
The road is gravel, with washboard and the odd pothole, and it has a long reputation for flats. Carry two full-size spares and a plug kit. Land along the corridor is a patchwork of state, Park Service, and private holdings, and the private parcels are not marked well. Confirm what you’re parked on before you set up, and stay off any posted ground. Cell service is basically nil out here. Check current road conditions with the Alaska DOT&PF and the Wrangell-St. Elias visitor center before you roll. Verify before you go.
