Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park Backway Access
Kansas chalk badlands rival Utah's formations
Kansas’ newest state park protects some of the most alien landscape in the Great Plains—towering chalk formations that look ripped from Utah but sit in the middle of wheat country. The backway access follows rough county roads and ranch tracks to reach viewpoints of the Niobrara chalk badlands, with the challenging section being the steep descent into Hell Creek drainage where deep ruts and loose chalk make traction tricky, especially when wet conditions turn the white rock into slippery clay.
This moderate route needs high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossing and steep chalk climbs—the surface becomes treacherous when damp. Avoid during wet weather entirely as the chalk turns to impassable gumbo. Best season is late spring through fall when conditions are dry. The park requires entry fees but the backway approaches are on county roads. What you get is access to some of Kansas’ most spectacular and least-known geology, including 100-foot chalk spires topped with ancient sea fossils, and the satisfaction of finding badlands scenery where nobody expects it.
