Fort Robinson State Park

Historic cavalry fort turned state park with full-service camping, museum, and trailheads in Nebraska's Pine Ridge country.

This sprawling state park occupies a former U.S. Army cavalry post where Crazy Horse was killed in 1877. The campground offers 123 sites with electric hookups scattered across multiple loops under mature cottonwoods, plus a handful of primitive sites for those wanting more solitude. The park maintains clean facilities including showers, flush toilets, and a dump station. Summer brings living history programs and can fill up on weekends, but spring and fall offer quieter camping.

Located just west of Crawford on Highway 20, the park serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the Pine Ridge area and Oglala National Grassland. The on-site museum, historic buildings, and extensive trail system make this more than just a place to sleep. Reservation recommended for weekend stays during peak season.
