Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site

Reconstructed 1820s fur trading post on the Missouri River, where overlanders can walk through the epicenter of western expansion.

This faithful reconstruction of the American Fur Company’s most important trading post sits exactly where John Jacob Astor’s empire met the Missouri River frontier. The massive wooden stockade, complete with bastions and trade house, brings the 1820s-1860s fur trade era to life. Living history demonstrations during summer months show blacksmithing, hide processing, and trade negotiations that shaped the American West.

Located 24 miles southwest of Williston on Highway 1804, it’s perfectly positioned for overlanders exploring the Fort Berthold Reservation trails or heading to Lake Sakakawea. The visitor center museum tells the full story of this cultural crossroads where Native American, French, Scottish, and American cultures collided and collaborated.

Reconstructed 1820s fur trading empire headquarters.
