This BLM area stretches across several square miles of genuine sand dunes and sagebrush flats about 20 miles north of Winnemucca. The dunes rise 40-60 feet and provide natural windbreaks for camping, though sites in the flats offer better star-gazing. No facilities whatsoever — pack it in, pack it out. The area sees moderate OHV use but has room for everyone.
Access via paved road then 3 miles of decent gravel. The sand can be soft in spots, so air down if you’re heading into the dune fields. Popular with overlanders as a halfway point between Reno and the Black Rock Desert playa crossing. Wind can howl through here, especially in spring.
