Winnemucca Sand Dunes BLM Dispersed Area

Open camping among rolling sand dunes north of Winnemucca, popular staging area for Black Rock Desert and northern Nevada expeditions.

This BLM area stretches across several square miles of genuine sand dunes and sagebrush flats about 20 miles north of Winnemucca. The dunes rise 40-60 feet and provide natural windbreaks for camping, though sites in the flats offer better star-gazing. No facilities whatsoever — pack it in, pack it out. The area sees moderate OHV use but has room for everyone.

Access via paved road then 3 miles of decent gravel. The sand can be soft in spots, so air down if you’re heading into the dune fields. Popular with overlanders as a halfway point between Reno and the Black Rock Desert playa crossing. Wind can howl through here, especially in spring.
