Gold Hill Road
Comstock Lode mining road with Sierra views
Gold Hill Road cuts through the heart of Nevada’s Comstock Lode country, winding down from the historic mining town of Gold Hill toward Carson City through the rugged Virginia Range. This historic route follows portions of the old freight roads that hauled silver and gold ore from the Comstock mines in the 1870s, passing abandoned mine shafts, tailings piles, and weathered mining structures that tell the story of Nevada’s biggest mineral bonanza. The road drops nearly 2,000 feet through pinyon pine and sagebrush country, offering sweeping views across Carson Valley and the Sierra Nevada beyond.
This is a moderate high-clearance route suitable for most stock 4WD vehicles, though the steep grades and loose rock sections demand attention. The road can be rutted and rocky in places, especially after winter weather, but it’s generally well-maintained for passenger cars with good clearance. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat can be intense at lower elevations. No permits required, and there are several spots for primitive camping along the route. It’s a perfect half-day adventure that combines Nevada mining history with solid backcountry driving and killer views of the Carson Valley.
