Togwotee Pass Road (US-26/287)

Togwotee Pass sits at 9,658 feet, marking the Continental Divide between the Teton and Absaroka ranges. This paved highway transforms into something more demanding when snow closes the main route and backcountry spurs beckon. Forest Road 30050 branches north toward Angle Mountain, while dozens of unmarked two-tracks split off toward hidden lakes and hunting camps. The pass itself offers unobstructed views of the Tetons’ backside and serves as a wildlife corridor for everything from moose to mountain goats.

The main highway stays moderate, but side routes demand high-clearance vehicles and experience reading terrain. Snow can hit any month above 8,000 feet, and services are 50 miles in either direction. Cell service dies completely between Moran Junction and Dubois. This is grizzly habitat—food storage isn’t optional. Best tackled May through October when gates are open, though early and late season offer the most solitude and wildlife activity.
