Painted Canyon Road
Slot canyon drive through rainbow-colored walls.
This tight canyon road squeezes between towering walls of red, yellow, and purple sedimentary rock layers laid down when the Salton Sea was part of the Gulf of California. The route follows an ancient flash flood channel into the Mecca Hills, passing slot canyons so narrow you can touch both walls from your driver’s seat. Hidden palm groves and ladder canyons branch off the main wash, including the famous Ladder Canyon with its series of dry falls requiring scrambling to continue.
Easy to moderate depending on recent flash floods—high-clearance 2WD usually handles it, but 4WD recommended after storms when sand and rocks pile up. Avoid during monsoon season (July-September) when flash floods turn this into a death trap. Winter and spring offer perfect temps for exploring the side canyons on foot. No permits required, but bring recovery gear for soft sand sections. This is geology class in real time, plus some of the most accessible slot canyon hiking in Southern California.
