Trans-America Trail – Tennessee Section

Cherokee backcountry on forgotten mining roads

Moderate

The Cherokee National Forest holds secrets in its hollers—old mining roads that snake through ridgelines where copper and timber once flowed like water. The Trans-America Trail’s Tennessee section follows these forgotten arteries for 130 miles, connecting Tellico Plains to the Kentucky border through backcountry that most travelers never see. You’ll climb from valley floors to 3,800-foot ridgetops, gaining 4,200 feet of elevation through terrain that tells the story of Appalachian industry and abandonment.

This is moderate-difficulty overlanding that rewards patience over aggression. Stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles the route fine, though you’ll work for every mile on surfaces that shift from gravel Forest Service roads to rocky mining tracks to creek crossings that can turn nasty after spring rains. Cell service disappears for long stretches, making this genuine backcountry travel despite running parallel to civilization. The Cherokee National Forest allows dispersed camping throughout most of the route, and you’ll want to take advantage—two to three days gives you time to explore the mining ruins and appreciate ridgeline views that stretch across multiple states on clear days.

April through October offers the best window, though spring can bring unpredictable water levels at creek crossings. Summer heat sits heavy in the valleys but breaks on the ridges where old-growth forest provides relief. Fall delivers the color tourists drive hours to see, but you’ll have it mostly to yourself up here. Fuel up in Tellico Plains and carry extra water—services are sparse once you commit to the route.

What you get is authentic Appalachian backcountry without the technical rock crawling that breaks rigs and bank accounts. The Tennessee TAT section offers overlanders a genuine taste of Cherokee National Forest’s remote corners, complete with mining history you can touch and ridgeline camping that reminds you why you bought that 4WD in the first place. It’s the kind of route that builds confidence without demanding sacrifice to the trail gods.
