Norris Fire Lookout sits atop a rocky granite knob at 8,894 feet, offering sweeping 360-degree views across the Sierra Nevada. The active lookout tower is staffed during fire season and serves as a critical fire detection point for the region. The structure itself is a classic cab-on-stilts design, accessible via a steep but well-maintained trail that gains significant elevation over a short distance.
Access is via Forest Road 3N16 followed by a moderately challenging 1.5-mile hike with about 800 feet of elevation gain. The road is rough but passable for high-clearance vehicles. Best visited during late spring through early fall when snow doesn’t block access. No camping allowed at the tower itself, but dispersed camping is available along the access road.
