Fire Tower Mountain Fire Lookout

Restored 1930s fire tower in the Adirondacks offering 360-degree views from its 60-foot cab after a moderate hike.

This 60-foot steel tower sits atop Fire Tower Mountain in the Adirondack Park, one of the few remaining fire lookouts still open to the public. Built in 1930, the restored cab provides sweeping views across the Saint Regis Canoe Area and countless lakes dotting the wilderness below. The tower is staffed by volunteers during summer months who share stories about the lookout’s history and fire detection methods.

Access requires a moderate 2.3-mile hike from the trailhead parking area on private logging roads. The trail is well-marked but can be muddy in spring and after rain. Tower is typically open Memorial Day through Columbus Day, weather permitting. No camping at the tower site itself, but dispersed camping is allowed in the surrounding Adirondack Park following Leave No Trace principles.
