Strawberry Mountain Fire Lookout crowns the highest peak in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness at 9,038 feet, providing sweeping views across eastern Oregon’s high country. The active tower operates during fire season, and visitors are welcome when staff permits. The summit offers excellent camping spots below treeline, with scattered whitebark pine providing minimal windbreak. Snow lingers well into June, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
The final approach requires 4WD and careful navigation of loose rock switchbacks on Forest Road 101. The lookout is typically staffed July through September, weather permitting. Pack warm gear even in summer — temperatures can drop below freezing at night. Water sources are scarce; the nearest reliable spring is 2 miles down the mountain.
