Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

A 71-mile reservoir cutting through red rock canyon walls where Montana meets Wyoming in dramatic high desert country.

Bighorn Lake stretches between towering canyon walls that rise over 1,000 feet from the water’s surface, creating one of the most striking reservoirs in the northern Rockies. The Montana section offers several boat launches and overlooks accessible by good gravel roads, with the Afterbay Dam area providing the best vehicle camping spots along the shoreline.

Access the Montana side via Highway 313 south of Hardin — the road becomes gravel but remains suitable for most vehicles. Water levels fluctuate significantly with irrigation demands, exposing dramatic red rock formations during low periods. The area sees heavy boat traffic in summer but remains peaceful in shoulder seasons when the canyon walls glow at sunrise and sunset.
