City of Rocks National Reserve

Towering granite spires and balanced rocks create a natural rock climbing cathedral in southern Idaho's high desert.

City of Rocks rises from the sagebrush like a granite cathedral, with 2.5-billion-year-old spires reaching 600 feet skyward. This 14,000-acre reserve showcases some of the West’s most spectacular rock formations — massive granite monoliths, balanced rocks, and slot canyons that attracted pioneers on the California Trail. World-class rock climbing draws technical enthusiasts, while easier scrambling routes let casual explorers get among the towers. The area stays busy spring through fall, especially weekends.

Access via gravel roads from either Almo or Oakley — both routes are well-maintained but dusty. The main scenic drive is rough dirt requiring high-clearance vehicles. Elevation around 6,000 feet means snow possible October through April. No services in the reserve itself; stock up in nearby Almo or Oakley.
