Fish Creek Wash
Desert slot canyon adventure through Split Mountain
Fish Creek Wash cuts a dramatic path through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, carving between towering mudstone walls that rise 300 feet overhead in places. The main route follows a sandy wash from Highway S2 to Split Mountain, where geological forces have created a perfect cross-section through ancient lake beds. The wash narrows dramatically at Split Mountain Gorge, creating cathedral-like passages where sunlight filters down through slot canyon walls painted in bands of rust, cream, and gray.
Most of this route runs easy to moderate, suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though sand can be challenging after rain. The optional Sandstone Canyon spur adds technical rock crawling for those seeking more challenge. Best tackled in cooler months from November to March when desert temperatures are manageable. No permits required, but carry plenty of water and recovery gear for soft sand. This is one of California’s most accessible slot canyon experiences, offering geological drama without the crowds of more famous destinations.
