Burgdorf Hot Springs Road
Hot springs reward through Payette backcountry.
The 30-mile gravel road to Burgdorf Hot Springs winds through dense Payette National Forest timber, crossing multiple creek fords and climbing from 4,000 to 6,000 feet elevation. Originally built as a mining access road in the early 1900s, this route passes remnants of old mining claims and logging operations before reaching the historic hot springs resort tucked into a mountain meadow. Several creek crossings, including Burgdorf Creek itself, require careful navigation during spring runoff, and the final approach involves navigating around large granite boulders.
This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD, especially during wet conditions when the clay-rich sections become treacherous. Best tackled June through October when snowpack clears, though early season means higher water at creek crossings. No permits required, but expect zero cell service and pack extra fuel—nearest services are 30+ miles back in McCall. The payoff is soaking in natural hot springs pools surrounded by pristine wilderness, with excellent dispersed camping opportunities throughout the forest.
