Fish River Canyon Northern Rim Trail

The Fish River carved this massive gash over 500 million years, leaving behind Africa’s second-largest canyon—and one hell of a rim drive that’ll test both driver and machine. The northern rim trail hugs precipitous edges where a wrong turn means a 550-meter drop into geological history. Sharp limestone and loose gravel demand constant attention, especially around Hell’s Bend where the canyon makes its dramatic horseshoe turn and the track narrows to barely vehicle width.

This is expert-level terrain that eats tires and punishes the unprepared. Reinforced sidewalls, multiple spares, and a winch aren’t luxury items here—they’re survival gear. May through September offers the only reasonable weather window; summer heat turns this into a death trap. No water sources exist along the rim, so plan for 4+ liters per person per day. The payoff?
