Cape to Cairo Trans-Africa Highway

Africa's ultimate overland odyssey

Extreme

The Cape to Cairo route is the Holy Grail of African overlanding — 10,000 kilometers of everything this continent can throw at you. Starting from Cape Town’s waterfront, the route runs north through the Kalahari, dodges around conflict zones, crosses the equator in Kenya, and ends at the pyramids of Giza. You’ll navigate everything from South African highways to Sudanese sand tracks, Ethiopian highlands to Kenyan savanna. The stretch through Sudan’s Nubian Desert tests both vehicle and spirit with corrugated tracks that shake fillings loose and fuel stops that exist only in GPS memory.

This is expedition-level overlanding requiring months of preparation, carnet documentation, and a reliable 4WD with comprehensive spares kit. Political situations shift constantly — routes through Libya remain problematic, forcing most overlanders through the eastern corridor via Ethiopia and Sudan. Budget 2-3 months minimum, carry multiple fuel and water reserves, and expect the unexpected. Border crossings can take days, mechanical failures happen far from help, and weather windows matter. The payoff is completing Africa’s greatest overland challenge with stories that’ll last a lifetime.
