Fish River Canyon Rim Drive

Technical canyon rim traverse through ancient geology

Difficult

Fish River Canyon’s rim roads demand respect — this isn’t some gentle scenic drive but a network of rocky 4×4 tracks that follow the edge of Africa’s second-largest canyon. The main route runs from Hobas campsite to the Ais-Ais hot springs, skirting the canyon’s eastern rim where the Orange River has carved through billion-year-old granite and schist. Key viewpoints like Hell’s Bend and the main lookout require careful navigation over loose rock and steep grades, with drop-offs that’ll pucker your sphincter if you get it wrong.

This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and experience reading rock. Summer temperatures can hit 50°C, making the cooler months (April to September) essential for safety. Carry extra water, tire repair kit, and recovery gear — help is scarce in this corner of the Kalahari. The payoff is massive: sunrise over the canyon walls, wild camping spots with million-dollar views, and the satisfaction of tackling one of southern Africa’s most challenging scenic drives. Permits aren’t required, but check conditions at Hobas before attempting the full loop.
