Dettifoss drops 144 feet across a 330-foot width, dumping glacial meltwater into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon with raw, primal force. The eastern viewpoint via Route 862 offers the classic perspective—stand close enough to feel the spray and hear nothing but roaring water. The western approach via F862 is rougher but less crowded, especially in shoulder seasons.
Eastern access is paved all the way to parking. Western route requires high-clearance vehicle and decent weather—F862 can be brutal in rain or snow. Both routes close in winter. Come early morning or late evening to dodge tour buses. The mist creates rainbows on sunny days, but also soaks everything within 100 meters.
