The overlook sits high above where the Rio Grande disappears into a narrow slot between 1,500-foot limestone walls — Mexico’s Sierra Ponce rising on the south bank, Texas’s Mesa de Anguila on the north. This is Big Bend at its most dramatic, where you can see the river’s entire journey through the canyon from above. The contrast between desert and water, shadow and light, makes this one of the park’s signature stops.
Access via Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, with the last few miles on good gravel. Short walk from the parking area to the main viewpoint. Come early morning or late afternoon for the best light and cooler temps. No facilities here — bring water and sun protection. The canyon trail down to river level starts from a separate trailhead nearby.
