Mata Mata Rest Camp — Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Mata Mata is the western camp in Kgalagadi on the South African side. It sits on the Auob riverbed with red dunes on both flanks. Campsites have a braai spot, power points at some pitches, and shared ablutions. A small shop sells basics and fuel, but check stock and hours before relying on it. Lion, cheetah, and gemsbok are regulars along the Auob, and a waterhole near camp pulls game in the cool hours. Sites fill up in school holidays and the dry winter months, so book through SANParks well ahead.
Most travelers drive in from Twee Rivieren on a long gravel road that follows the riverbed. Corrugations can be rough, so air down and take your time. Mata Mata also has a border post to Namibia’s Gareb entry, which lets you link into Namibia without backtracking. Check current border rules, hours, and vehicle requirements with SANParks ahead of time. Summer is blazing hot and storm-prone, while winter nights drop near freezing. Gate times are enforced, so don’t dawdle on the drive in.
