Khongoryn Els — Gobi Singing Dunes Wild Camping
Khongoryn Els is the big one in the Gobi, a long wall of sand rising out of the steppe in Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. Wind across the crest is said to hum, which is where the Singing Dunes name comes from. Camping is open-desert style on the flats at the dune base, usually near the Khongor river oasis, where you’ll see herders, camels, and a few ger camps. It’s wide open, with no facilities beyond what you bring. Sunrise and sunset on the ridge are worth the climb, and the climb is a long, hard slog up loose sand.
Getting here is a full remote-driving effort over unmarked dirt and sand tracks from Dalanzadgad. Navigation is by GPS, local knowledge, and asking herders. Carry fuel, water, spares, and recovery gear. Summer brings sudden storms and wind, and winter is brutal. Park entrance fees apply, and you may need a border-area permit, so check current rules with park authorities or a local operator before you go. Respect herder water sources. Have a dirty day.
